Tube Driver Wins Damages

A London Underground train driver has been awarded damages for a back injury he sustained when his seat collapsed.

The unnamed train operator was driving a train towards Earls Court. He was leaning forwards in the seat, with his right hand on the lever operating the train. As he leant on the arm rest, the back of the seat suddenly collapsed forwards.
The man twisted his lower back as well as suffering an injury between his shoulder and neck. As a result of the accident he was off work for eight weeks.

Tube drivers’ seats used to be secured to the back wall of the cab but were repositioned some years ago so as to rest on a metal pole extending from the floor. The driver maintained that since the change was made, many of his colleagues had also experienced problems with the chairs.

The man brought a claim against London Underground, which has now agreed a settlement.
