August 2007 - Joyrider victim compensation

The victim of a joyrider is set to receive a substantial sum in compensation following a ruling in the High Court.

Gary Dawes was hit by a stolen car being driven by Craig Aldis, who had been travelling up and down Mr Dawes’ road, repeatedly revving the car’s engine and executing handbrake turns.

After Mr Aldis mounted the pavement to avoid plain clothes police officers, he sped away on the wrong side of the road and hit Mr Dawes, who was tossed over the car.

As a result of the accident Mr Dawes suffered many broken bones and was left with severe brain damage. He now requires 24-hour care.

The level of the compensation award has yet to be decided, but it is thought that Mr Dawes could receive several million pounds.

Tanveer Jaleel, senior partner at TJL Solicitors comments: “Eight out of ten personal injury claims we deal with involve road traffic accidents, and our legal experts understand the pain and stress associated with such incidents.

“In Mr Dawes’ case, he was an innocent pedestrian whose injuries have had a long term effect. The compensation awarded to him will be essential in providing him with a more comfortable life.”
